Preschool-Aged Children
Preschool
(ages 2-5) stuttering therapy is designed for children who are
experiencing disruptions in their speech and have risk factors for
continued stuttering. Therapy usually begins with parent
education and training in communication styles, and will be adjusted to
meet the specific needs of each child and his or her family.
Consultation with preschool educators or any significant others in the
child's communication environment will also be a part of the therapy
process. The treatment program includes both indirect and direct
therapy approaches with a strong parent training/counseling component. |

School-Aged Children
School-aged
(ages 5-13) stuttering therapy is for children who stutter.
Therapy involves education regarding stuttering as well as training in
speech modification strategies. Therapy also emphasizes the support of
a child's self-esteem and confidence as he or she learns to cope with
and handle stuttering in everyday life. |

Adolescent/Adult Stuttering Therapy
Adolescents
and adults who stutter may bring to therapy specific challenges that
they face as they deal with communication in their everyday
lives. Therapy with adolescents and adults involves education
about stuttering and speech management strategies. It also involves a
diverse range of activities to support the self-esteem and confidence
of the person who stutters. |
